Rozsa Foundation HR Research: Did You Know? #1

Did You Know?  Artistic Directors are more likely to have a formal education in the arts but Executive Directors and General Managers have little formal management education training.

This is certainly due in part to the fact that there are more existing formal education opportunities for artists than for arts administrators.  Many ED’s and GM’s have learned their management skills on the job, through mentors, and through informal professional development courses.

The Rozsa Foundation believes there needs to be more post-secondary programs in Arts Management.

Did You Know?

We partner with the University of Alberta School of Business, Canadian Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility.  As part of their Executive Education and Business MBA program, a class in Arts Management will now be offered!

SMO 686 – Managing Arts Organizations will be offered in Winter Term 2012 and instructed by Dr. Roy Suddaby.  Dr. Suddaby is the Director of the Canadian Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility, Eldon Foote Chair in Law and Society, and Eric Geddes Professor of Business.

Rozsa Award recipients will deliver public lectures for this course, and students will interact with Arts Managers in Edmonton.  The course is also part of the Centre’s new Stream in Sustainability which focuses on all aspects of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) from social entrepreneurship to environmental management and of course, arts management!  This is the first step towards U of A one day offering a formal specialization in sustainability and, hopefully, an MBA Arts Management degree.

We hope to see current and future arts managers in Alberta benefitting from this ground-breaking course!

See our Art Dialogue page for more detailed statistics from our research and other statistics around this topic.

This is the first in a series of post’s we will release regarding our recent research.

We will be conducting research on a bi-annual basis.  Please start letting us know: What new research does your organization need?  Contact us at admin@rozsafoundation.org, or through Twitter or Facebook.

In March, a summary of new research ideas will be posted so we can gather your feedback and give you one last chance to provide suggestions.

Note: This data comes form the Rozsa Foundation’s 2011 survey of Calgary & Southern Alberta arts organizations.  Please email us at admin@rozsafoundation.org if you would like further information.
