Lola Rozsa

On Sunday April 15, our co-founder Dr. Lola May Rozsa passed away peacefully to her final home in heaven.  She was pre-deceased by her husband and Rozsa Foundation co-founder Ted Rozsa in 2006.

The Rozsa Foundation mourns the loss of this exceptional mother, grandmother and friend.  The strength of family and importance of church community formed the foundation of Lola's life.

In 1955, Lola became one of the founding members and later president, of the Calgary Philharmonic Society Women’s League, where she helped create the school children’s concerts and the Benny the Bookworm fundraiser, both initiatives which still exist today. After twenty-five years as an active volunteer, she and Ted turned their focus to philanthropic contributions to the CPO as well as many other arts organizations. They ensured that a fine acoustic hall was built on the campus of the University of Calgary. Although the venue bears their...

Rozsa Foundation HR Research: Did You Know? #1

Did You Know?  Artistic Directors are more likely to have a formal education in the arts but Executive Directors and General Managers have little formal management education training.

This is certainly due in part to the fact that there are more existing formal education opportunities for artists than for arts administrators.  Many ED’s and GM’s have learned their management skills on the job, through mentors, and through informal professional development courses.

The Rozsa Foundation believes there needs to be more post-secondary programs in Arts Management.

We partner with the University of Alberta School of Business, Canadian Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility.  As part of their Executive Education and Business MBA program, a class in Arts Management will now be offered!

Rozsa Foundation President, Mary Rozsa de Coquet, was recently honoured as the 2011 Outstanding Individual Philanthropist.  Nominated by Cantos Music Foundation and presented by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Mary was recognized at a luncheon on National Philanthropy Day, Tuesday November 15, 2011 at the BMO Centre and also at a private reception with His Honour, Col, (Ret'd) the Honourable Donald S. Ethell.  In addition to her work with Cantos and the National Music Centre, Mary was recognized for her many years of work and guidance with Pioneer Camps, Calgary Arts Development Authority, ArtsVote Calgary, and the Rozsa Foundation.  She has been a champion of the arts in Calgary for many years and here at the Rozsa Foundation we are proud to call her our leader.  A video showing photos throughout Mary's career as a philanthropist was presented at the luncheon; highlighting two teenagers who participate in a Cantos music program, supported by Mary, where, as the young girl said, "We just get to come play our guitars after school - it's cool".  The significance of one person getting to experience the arts is not lost on Mary.  ...

How Generosity Helped Make City a Cultural Capital
October 30, 2011

A few weeks ago, Calgary was declared a cultural capital of Canada for 2012. A shock to some who don't have first-hand experience with our vibrant arts and culture scene, this designation was earned by our city because of the thriving base of cultural...
